Advice and FAQs
If you’re an events organiser, speaker (established or up and coming) or simply an attendee, this section should hopefully equip you with the tools and knowledge you need to help events and conferences increase their DICE score.
EVENTS and conference organisers
We have worked with a multitude of partners and advisors on the road to getting the charter created and nearly all of them can help you with your D&I. If you need to speak to an expert or want to find the right voice for the right topic, we would strongly recommend starting with them.
The following bullets of advice are suggestions and signposts
Many industries have created lists of women eager to speak at events. Try http://ecommerce-speakers.com/ for the retail space and http://marketing-speakers.com/ for the marketing industry.
We have found that getting people who aren’t normally on stage to speak at your event may take more research, more conversations and more reassurance than you would usually expect. Be prepared for this.
If in doubt, ask a senior white man in the industry your event represents to nominate two or three people, who don’t look or sound like him, who would make great additional to an events line-up.
If you are struggling to find a diverse line-up for a panel think we would strongly recommend changing the topic of your panel. For example, if you want only a panel of agency group CEOs in APAC (all of whom are men) think about whether you could have the same insights and outcomes by changing the level or seniority or job title.
In all the stress of organising an event (we know, we’ve been there!) it’s easy to overlook some quite simple things, like: is your website accessible? Do you have a signer? Are the fonts of presentations large enough for all delegates to read? Does your venue have disabled access?
If you are really, really stuck and don’t know what else to do to improve your score, then please contact us.
DO YOU SPEAK AT EVENTS?
DICE will not work unless we approach it from all angles - and to do that we need the help of those that grace the stages and panels of the conference scene.
Our advice is when you are asked to speak at events, would be to get answers from the events organisers on the following things:
Who else is speaking?
If there are too many men, or too many white people - say no, or send the events organisers a link to the DICE Charter and ask them to get themselves certified (the process is free).Does the content of the event consider different perspectives and communities?
(i.e. age, class, sexuality)Will the events organiser be making some tickets available to people who otherwise would not be able to attend?
Does the venue have disabled access?
Do you know your DICE Charter score/Have you considered becoming DICE registered?
Send them to getdice.co.uk
DO YOU WANT TO SPEAK AT EVENTS?
DICE was set up to help give more oxygen to the opinions and experiences of those people that self-identify with any of the nine protected characteristics as defined by the 2010 Equality Act.
If you are one of these people and want to be invited to speak then please contact us.
Attending an event in the near future?
We want everyone and anyone who is associated with any conference or event to empowered and inspired to ensure DICE certification is rolled out everywhere.
If you see the event and do not think it is representative then do please email the organisers and direct them to DICE.
If you have concerns about an event or conference agenda - or its marketing or accessibility - and would like us to take a look at it, then please get in touch .
We will make attempts to contact the events organiser to help them get DICE certified.
